The Village Board hired The Lakota Group, a Chicago-based firm specializing in urban design, landscape architecture, planning, community engagement, and historic preservation to conduct the process and develop the plan. The Lakota team will use multiple methods to engage interested community stakeholders about their vision for downtown, including focus group/key person interviews, community workshops, and online surveys. Initial engagement activities will begin in April and occur throughout the course of the project. Previously owned by the Pittman Family, the 2-acre parcel at the northeast corner of Main and Orchard is currently zoned as “Village Core” and could accommodate commercial, residential, open space or a mixed-use application. The Village recently purchased this parcel in December, 2020, after several attempts and years of negotiation, and now has the ability to control its destiny. The Village acquired the property for $510,000; an amount below the appraised value of the land. “Making this property a community asset, and not a liability, is essential. There are economic development opportunities here, and also parks and naturalistic options. I want to listen to the public’s desires before any decisions are made” said Mayor Lawrence M. Hanson. Mayor Hanson has heard from his Village Board and the public that a renaming of the property is needed, which will also be a component of the community engagement. While there are some concepts and ideas for the future use of that property, it won’t be fully decided until there are adequate public input processes, community and stakeholder buy-in, and ultimately Village Board approval. Key steps will be for the Lakota team to collect and review data; prepare maps; meet with Village leaders, staff, and stakeholders; conduct land-use and physical conditions analyses; and identify issues and opportunities. This will be followed by the creation of a clear and exciting vision for downtown built on community input that celebrates Antioch’s unique qualities and sets the stage for a vibrant and resilient local economy. An Antioch Downtown Beautification Project website is currently being constructed and will be available in late March to provide updates.

Village of Antioch, IL March 12, 2021 – The Village of Antioch has signed the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayors’ Monarch Pledge , committing to take actions to help save the declining monarch butterfly and other pollinators. The Village of Antioch is now part of an expanding North American network of cities working to create habitat in public parks, public landscaping, vacant lots, roadsides, medians, green roofs, backyard gardens and open spaces throughout the entire community. “Cities, towns and counties play a pivotal role in advancing monarch butterfly conservation in urban and suburban areas,” said Patrick Fitzgerald, senior director of community wildlife at the National Wildlife Federation. “By working together, we can ensure that every American child has a chance to experience majestic monarchs in their communities.” “This project was initially brought to us by Joanne Dugenske and Joyce Kufalk from the Antioch Garden Club, looking for community involvement to help support the monarch,” said Mayor Lawrence M. Hanson. “With National Wildlife Week just around the corner in early April, I thought of no greater time to issue the proclamation calling public attention to the decline of the butterfly and pledging the Village of Antioch’s support for the iconic species.” In addition to issuing the proclamation, the Public Works Department also worked with the Antioch Garden club to have milkweed planted in Pedersen Park. Found across the United States, monarch butterflies numbered around 1 billion in 1996. Today, their numbers have declined significantly as a result of numerous threats, particularly the loss of habitat due to cropland conversion, urban development, and agricultural practices. Degradation of wintering habitat in Mexico and California has also had a negative impact on the species. Through the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayors’ Monarch Pledge , cities and municipalities commit each year to create habitat and educate residents on how to make a difference at home or in their community. Mayors who take the pledge commit to at least three of 30 action items to help save the monarch butterfly. These actions include creating a monarch-friendly garden at city hall, converting abandoned lots to monarch habitat, changing mowing schedules to allow milkweed to grow unimpeded, and 27 other possible actions. Through the National Wildlife Federation’s Community Wildlife Programs, cities, counties and towns across the United States are helping local wildlife by restoring and reconnecting habitat in urban and suburban areas while reconnecting people with nature. For more information about the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge, please go to: NWF.org/MayorsMonarchPledge . Visit the National Wildlife Federation Media Center at NWF.org/News .

The newest industrial user moving into Antioch, IL is Westfall Technik – a global manufacturing company creating plastic components for the healthcare industry. Located at 606 Drom Court, this industrial site was previously occupied by MGS Manufacturers, who vacated the building in 2020. “We are excited to have Westfall Technik join our Antioch community,” said Mayor Lawrence Hanson. “Industrial users continue to bring new jobs and growth, and we are thrilled to be the new home for Westfall.” 120 new employees will be hired to work at this new facility beginning in the Spring. Westfall Technik is one of many recent industrial users coming to town. Handi-Foil built their facility at the Antioch Corporate Center in 2018, and was quickly accompanied by NuWave, GFX and the recently constructed 170,000 square-foot Fisher Paper Product facility. These manufacturing businesses have brought several jobs to the Village of Antioch in recent years. Westfall Technik is “All In”, providing end-to-end manufacturing solutions for the complete life cycle of molded plastic parts. From design to prototype, and through production and delivery, their services provide products that are sustainable and benefit people and the planet. Antioch is delighted to be the most recent addition to their 18 worldwide locations. “We are excited to be welcomed to the Antioch community by Mayor Hanson. After immediate facility upgrades and improvements, Westfall Technik will be hosting a grand opening “open house” for customers to tour the site. The site will serve our current customers and new customers in the medical plastic injection molding and assembly market. With that, we are excited about being able to hire folks from the local area to help and grow our very exciting business while supporting local businesses. At Westfall Technik we pride ourselves in creating opportunities for our employees which can provide career advancement while providing a significant contribution to the healthcare industry and to the well-being of end users. We look forward to being part of the Antioch community” said Mark Gomulka, Chief Operating Officer for Westfall Technik.

It has been recently discovered that there was an error showing the vote for Village Board Resolution No. 18-35 approving the site plan for the Rivalry Ale House. The resolution indicated, incorrectly, that there were 6 voting yes to approve the site plan, including Trustees Johnson and Macek. According to the meeting minutes, and verified through the meeting recording, Trustees Johnson and Macek did, in fact, recuse themselves from this discussion. Village staff apologizes for this error, and will correct the resolution immediately to reflect the accurate vote on this matter. Corrected Resolution
